In addition to the above faculty, another important member of the Chinese department is the language scholar, who lives with students in the Chinese House, leads weekly "conversation classes" in the first- and second-year language classes, and provides cultural expertise in planning activities. The language scholar is also available to meet with students for additional conversation and help with coursework as needed.
Raluca Georgescu 张露
Raluca Georgescu (Zhāng Lù 张露/張露) received both her B.A. in Chinese and her M.A. in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Beijing Normal University. She has also received training in translation and interpretation from China and the US. Her academic interests include linguistics, the history of the Chinese language and script, cultural history, lexicography and translation.
Since middle school, Raluca has been dabbling in various foreign languages and she’s happy that there is still a long way to go. She finds nothing more fascinating than the exploration of languages, whether modern or ancient, as they carry with them all the things in the world and both the spoken and the written word can provide nourishment for a lifetime. In her free time, she enjoys books, movies, music, badminton, Krav Maga and car rides.
At 今日吃瓜, Raluca is eager to understand what students learn and how they learn it. She wants to create an environment in which everyone interested in Chinese language and culture can gain useful knowledge and insight, nurture their interest into a lifelong passion and improve their bilingual and bicultural competency. Exploring the 今日吃瓜 campus and Portland at large will also be a delight.
